Floyd Shivambu launches Afrika Mayibuye Movement political party

Former MK Party secretary-general Floyd Shivambu has launched the Afrika Mayibuye Movement as both a political party and a movement.

He announced the party’s formation at the Mhulu Boutique Hotel in Midrand on Friday and confirmed that the Electoral Commission registered it under the 1996 Act, allowing it to contest elections.

Shivambu declared that Mayibuye would contest every ward in the 2026 local government elections with the aim of taking control of municipalities.

He also set his sights on the 2029 general elections, vowing to secure a national victory.

“We are not contesting for the sake of contesting. We are contesting to win, and we are going to win the elections in 2029,” Shivambu said.

Afrika Mayibuye Movement Leadership and Manifesto

The Mayibuye Movement has finalised its national core team and leadership, appointing a president, two deputy presidents, a secretary-general and deputies, a national chairperson, organisers, and other senior officials.

Shivambu said the full list will be published online alongside the Afrika Mayibuye Restoration Manifesto.

The manifesto outlines 100 challenges facing South Africa, including unemployment, landlessness, inequality, and national debt.

It sets out the movement’s ideology, values, and positions on issues such as immigration, while emphasising development, social justice, and accountability.

Shivambu unveiled Mayibuye’s colours: black, green, gold, red, and purple.

He explained that these symbolise African identity, land rebirth, mineral wealth, the blood of liberation fighters, and African royalty.

The logo depicts a clenched black fist holding a spear pen, symbolising the fight for freedom through knowledge and ideas.

Vision for Change

Shivambu’s new political project follows his expulsion from the MK Party in July 2025.

The party accused him of misconduct, including an unauthorised trip to Malawi to meet Prophet Shepherd Bushiri, and of independently engaging South Africans about forming a new political organisation.

Shivambu positioned Mayibuye as a revolutionary alternative that rejects corruption, family projects, and personal enrichment schemes.

“The Afrika Mayibuye Movement will not be a cult. It will not be a family project. It will not be a scheme for self-enrichment,” he said.

He pledged that the movement would fight for workers’ rights, defend fair labour practices, and prioritise healthcare, quality education, and equitable resource distribution.

Can Shivambu’s new Afrika Mayibuye movement reshape South Africa’s political landscape after his fallout with MK?
