Former Bafana defender has one concern about Hugo Broos

Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Matthew Booth has given one critique on Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos.

The 73-year-old Belgian tactician has guided Bafana to their first World Cup in more than 23 years. He also helped the nation to a third-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Broos joined Bafana in 2021, and despite initial poor results, he was given a chance to improve the squad, which he did.

Booth, who played for Bafana between 1999 and 2010, felt Broos should be looking at overseas-based players.

“One of the few criticisms about Broos is that he hasn’t really looked at overseas players much since he arrived here. I don’t think that should be the case,” Booth told FARPost.

The former Downs defender said the coach should travel abroad to keep tabs on South African players who are based abroad. Under Broos, Bafana has mostly featured locally based players, which many feel has been the reason behind the team’s success in the past two years.

“He should travel and watch, and to reassure, let players overseas know that he is keeping tabs on them.

“I think that is very important. I don’t think he has done enough of that. Now with the squad having qualified for the World Cup, it’s not right to change the squad because this is the squad that has worked very hard to qualify,” Booth said.
