Former Chiefs coach explains why Jose Riveiro failed at Al Ahly

Former Kaizer Chiefs head coach Cavin Johnson has explained why Jose Riveiro‘s brief tenure at Al Ahly failed.

The Spaniard joined the Egyptian Giants in June after leaving Orlando Pirates where he won five trophies in five seasons during his three-year stay. Al Ahly sacked the 49-year-old coach after a poor start to the season.

Johnson, who worked with Pitso Mosimane in the 2021/22 season at Al Ahly, feels the ex-Pirates coach failed in Egypt due to his lack of understanding of African football.

Jose Riveiro fired after seven games at Jose Riveiro

“In all respects to Jose Riverio, I don’t know if he worked at any other African club when he started at Pirates, because all those things play a role. Suppose you look at the fact that Ahly is the club of the century. That comes with a lot of pressure by itself,” the ex-Chiefs told FARPost.

“I always ask myself, did Jose Riveiro look at that before he left Pirates? Does he really understand the African game? When you have to play in the CAF Champions League or Confederation Cup and all the local teams and the World Cup, do you understand the magnitude?” Johnson asked.

Jose Riveiro left Pirates for Al Ahly but his tenure started badly as he failed to win a single game during the FIFA Club World Cup. The Red Devils were eliminated in the first round.

Where should Riveiro go?
