Gauteng set for scattered thunderstorms

Gauteng residents should prepare for unsettled weather patterns as thunderstorms move through the region. Scattered showers are forecast across central and southern areas, with cooler nights expected.

Forecaster Odirile Modipa said Gauteng will not escape the wet conditions.

“Scattered showers and thundershowers are expected over the central and southern parts of Gauteng, extending into surrounding provinces,” Modipa explained.

The rainfall, although less intense than in coastal regions, will still affect evening and morning travel.

Gauteng conditions will persist throughout the day

The South African Weather Service said these conditions will persist throughout the day. Residents should expect cloudy conditions across much of the province, contrasting with the clearer skies in the Northern Cape.

Temperatures are expected to dip significantly overnight. Johannesburg will record a minimum of 13°C, while Pretoria will see around 14°C. Despite these lows, warmer conditions are expected in far northern parts of the country.

“The nights will be fairly cold, with an average of 10°C in Bloemfontein and 11°C in Bethlehem. Gauteng, too, will feel the chill,” Modipa added.

Safety reminders for residents

Authorities have urged communities to remain cautious during thunderstorms. Heavy rain often results in localised flooding, particularly in low-lying and poorly drained areas. Motorists are also advised to reduce speed and keep headlights on in wet conditions.

With spring storms making their presence felt, residents may need to adjust outdoor plans. If conditions worsen, the showers could disrupt social and sporting events.
