WhatsApp is testing a new feature that could allow users to create usernames, potentially eliminating the need to share personal phone numbers when chatting with others.
The feature is currently being trialed in version 25.17.10.70 of WhatsApp’s beta and introduces what the platform is calling a “personal handle”, similar to usernames on platforms like Instagram.
Privacy upgrade
The new username system would enable users to communicate without revealing their phone numbers, a major privacy boost – especially in group chats or with unknown contacts.
When someone changes their username, group members will be notified, similar to alerts when members join or leave.
Username rules:
WhatsApp is testing strict guidelines to keep handles safe and clean:
- Must include at least one letter
- Can contain lowercase letters, numbers (0–9), underscores (_), and periods (.)
- No domains allowed: cannot begin with “www” or end in “.com”
- Length must be between 3 to 30 characters
- Cannot start or end with a period, nor use consecutive periods
Still in beta
The feature remains in testing and WhatsApp has not confirmed a public release date.
It also hasn’t shared any official updates on its blog.
This username rollout could mark one of WhatsApp’s most significant privacy upgrades since end-to-end encryption, giving users more control over their identity and visibility online.
