The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has confirmed the latest official fuel price changes, with petrol costs set to decrease, while diesel users will pay significantly more.
The change in prices will come into effect at midnight on Tuesday, 5 August.
Both 95 and 93 octane petrol will see a drop of 28 cents per litre. The decline comes after a relatively stable July in international oil markets, with earlier over-recoveries holding firm.
A strong early-month performance in both oil prices and the rand-dollar exchange rate helped cushion petrol costs, despite late-month market jitters caused by confirmed US tariffs.
In stark contrast, diesel prices will rise sharply by 63 to 65 cents per litre, driven largely by supply constraints and global market dynamics that continue to pressure diesel production and reserves.
What’s Behind the Changes?
Supply Pressures: Diesel markets remain tight, with reduced output and logistical issues impacting availability.
Oil Prices: Rebounded in July after a volatile June, but gains were limited by economic uncertainties, particularly US trade policy.
Rand Performance: Held steady for most of July, but weakened later due to fears over international tariffs.
