Spotify users wanting to share songs with friends or family no longer need to switch over to WhatsApp, Instagram, or other social platforms.
Available to both free and premium users aged 16 and older, Spotify’s new DM feature allows private one-on-one conversations where you can share songs, playlists, podcasts, or audiobooks.
Friends can reply with text or emoji reactions, making it easier to keep the conversation going while staying in Spotify.
The rollout is happening gradually, and should be complete this week.
“Spotify users have told us they want a dedicated space within the app to share songs, podcasts, or audiobooks they’re excited about with friends and family, and an easy way to keep track of recommendations,” the streaming giant said in a press release.
How to message someone on Spotify
Sending a DM on Spotify is fairly straightforward. While listening to something on Spotify, tap the share icon in the Now Playing view, select a friend from the suggestions, and hit send.
Suggested contacts are generated based on your Spotify activity – for example, people you’ve shared music with before, created collaborative playlists with, or joined Jams and Blends. Members of your Duo or Family plan will also show up as likely connections.
If someone sends you a message, you’ll first need to accept their request before you can see what they’ve shared.
Once connected, you can exchange songs, text, and emoji reactions. If you haven’t interacted with a friend on Spotify before, they’ll have to approve the request before the conversation begins.
Safety tools
Spotify has added moderation features to keep the DM system safe. Users can block unwanted contacts, report harmful or illegal content, and rely on proactive detection tools that scan messages for flagged keywords. Reported material will also be reviewed by human moderators.
To find your messages later, tap your profile photo in the top-left corner of the app to open your conversation history.
