Kaizer Chiefs have wasted no time reinforcing their defence, securing Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane just days after their exit from arch-rivals Orlando Pirates. The move comes as a clear signal of intent from the Soweto giants, who are desperate to bounce back stronger in the upcoming season.
Both defenders bring experience and grit to a Chiefs side that struggled with depth in the full-back positions. With Reeve Frosler sidelined due to injury and Thatayaone Ditlhokwe departing, the urgency to strengthen the backline was impossible to ignore.
Pirates confirmed Mako and Monyane exit
Orlando Pirates confirmed on Friday that Mako and Monyane were departing, with Mako’s contract set to expire at the end of June. Chiefs capitalised immediately, offering Mako a three-year deal, effective from 1 July.
Monyane joins to challenge Frosler for the right-back spot, giving coach Nasreddine Nabi a much-needed boost in options. The signings represent more than just player acquisitions, they’re a statement of dominance over their biggest rivals.
What about Solomons, Dove, and Frosler?
The arrival of Mako and Monyane raises key questions about the futures of Dillan Solomons, Edmilson Dove, and Reeve Frosler.
Solomons filled in at right-back during Frosler’s injury. Despite his efforts, the technical team noted several deficiencies in his performances. With Monyane’s arrival, Solomons is now the third choice in that position. Having signed a four-year contract in 2022, he still has a year left, and Chiefs are expected to keep him as a squad player.
Edmilson Dove’s future appears uncertain. The Mozambican international’s contract expires at the end of June, and although Amakhosi triggered a one-year extension last season, indications suggest he may not have done enough to secure another renewal.
Mako’s arrival sparks tactical Chiefs shift
Mako is set to slot in as the first-choice left-back. Chiefs’ tactical overhaul includes moving Bradley Cross to left centre-back, with Aden McCarthy also lined up as a backup to Rushwin Dortley.
This structural shift suggests Nabi is building a more robust and dynamic defence. With Monyane and Mako offering pace, aggression, and attacking threat from wide areas.
Frosler set to fight for his spot
Despite missing the latter part of the season due to injury, Reeve Frosler remains central to Chiefs’ plans. The 27-year-old signed a contract extension in March and featured 16 times in the Betway Premiership.
He is still regarded as the club’s primary right-back, but with Monyane’s arrival, competition for the role intensifies, something Nabi believes is crucial for maintaining high performance.
