Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly slapped a R15 million valuation on their captain Yusuf Maart, amid intensifying interest from Austrian side SV Ried. However, concerns are growing over whether the European outfit can meet the Soweto giants’ asking price.
Maart’s absence from Chiefs’ pre-season tour to the Netherlands has fuelled speculation, with insiders confirming the decision was a calculated step towards finalising his move.
“The deal is as good as done. It’s believed that Chiefs have asked for R15 million from SV Ried. They are making good business with these players moving away. They did the same with Teenage Hadebe, Siyabonga Ngezana and recently Thatayaone Ditlhokwe,” first source revealed.
SV Ried may struggle to close the deal
Despite the growing buzz, Chiefs’ hefty asking price could derail the transfer. A second source based in Austria expressed serious doubts about SV Ried’s financial capacity.
“Ried would never pay that amount in his life. I can’t imagine that. If that’s true, the deal will fall through in my opinion,” the source explained.
Kaizer Chiefs extended Maart’s contract ahead of its expiry in June, a smart move to ensure they didn’t lose their midfield general for free. This decision now gives Amakhosi a solid platform to negotiate top value.
Having joined the club from Sekhukhune United three seasons ago. Maart earned the captain’s armband last season, a testament to his growing influence at Naturena.
More departures brewing at Naturena?
Maart might not be the only exit on the cards. Edson Castillo could also leave before the new season kicks off, depending on transfer interest and his personal ambitions.
“They could still lose Castillo before the season starts, depending on the interest in the player and the player’s wish and request to move on to another club. That’s the other foreign quota space which could open up at the club,” the source noted.
