Kaizer Chiefs will still finish 9th with their shiny new signings

Kaizer Chiefs are making a splash in the transfer market. However, new toys don’t always deliver immediate results.

Ethan Chislett arrives from Port Vale to bolster the club’s attacking midfield options.

Deals for Thabiso Monyane, Paseka Mako, Etiosa Ighodaro and Asanale Velebayi are ongoing.

Today’s transfer tea

Chiefs are making a splash

Chiefs have wrapped up a two-year deal for South African-born Ethan Chislett. The attacking midfielder can operate in several roles behind the striker and wore the number 10 for Port Vale, who were recently relegated to League Two, the fourth tier of English football. Agent Mike Makaab is a huge fan of his work, praising Chislett for his ability and knack for seeing a pass and scoring goals. Chiefs will need a huge contribution from Chislett straight off the bat; so far, Mdu Shabalala has struggled with the burden of being their primary creator of chances.

Mako and Monyane add experience, but there are question marks

Orlando Pirates discarded full-back duo Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane without a second thought. 25-year-old Monyane is a steady, traditional option, but doesn’t offer much in the final third, while Mako is 31 and probably beyond his best.

Are Ighodaro and Velebayi good enough for Kaizer Chiefs?

Much has been said about Asanele Velebayi’s quality and ability to beat his marker on the inside or outside. However, the left-footer’s finishing is still sketchy and needs a lot of work. Nigerian striker Etiosa Ighodaro was deemed surplus to requirements at Sundowns and shipped out to AmaZulu. Why is the 24-year-old now good enough to represent Chiefs?

Fans need to remain realistic

Abrupt, wholesale changes to a squad look good on social media and placate the fans, but there’s no guarantee they’ll bed in and function as a unit, even in the long term. It’s almost certain they won’t do so in the short term. Another season outside the top eight isn’t out of the question. Also, totally off topic, but the club needs a proper goalkeeper. Why don’t see any of those linked with moves?

What do you make of the club’s business so far, Amakhosi?
