King Charles and Queen Camilla honour late Duchess

King Charles and Queen Camilla took part in the annual Braemar Gathering in Royal Deeside, Scotland, on Saturday.

The event is also marked as part of the King’s annual summer holiday at nearby Balmoral Castle. The Braemar Gathering is one of the last Highland games of the summer season.

Among the exciting contests were caber tossing, hammer throwing, Highland dancing, a hill race, and a mass pipe band parade.

King Charles, who has attended the games many times as Duke of Rothesay, wore a traditional kilt. Queen Camilla complemented him with a striking blue coat featuring a tartan collar, according to The BBC.

HONOURING THE DUCHESS OF KENT

Before the event began, attendees observed a minute’s silence to honour the late Duchess of Kent, who died recently.

This solemn moment showed the respect the royal family holds for their members.

KING CHARLES AT THE BRAEMAR GATHERING

The village of Braemar holds the Gathering every year on the first Saturday of September. For nearly 200 years, the small village of Braemar.

This village is nestled in the Cairngorms and has hosted the event in its current form. Queen Victoria attended the games back in 1848, and since then, the monarch has been a regular visitor.

A visitor, Charles Michael, shared his excitement: “It’s amazing to see our British heritage come alive like this. The energy and spirit here are unforgettable.”

Volunteer Fiona MacLeod said, “The Gathering is a wonderful way to celebrate our traditions. We are proud to welcome people from all corners, who connect with their roots here.”

SCOTLAND’S HERITAGE

The Braemar Gathering costs visitors roughly R950 ($50) for tickets, making it an accessible cultural experience for international tourists.

For many South Africans interested in royal affairs and Scotland’s heritage, this event remains a highlight of the year.

King Charles and Queen Camilla’s attendance emphasised the strong ties between the British monarchy and its global supporters.
