Kunene cleared of wrongdoing – ‘finish and klaar’ says McKenzie

Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie has confirmed that the party’s deputy president, Kenny Kunene, has been cleared of any criminal allegations linked to alleged crime boss Katiso “KT” Molefe.

Molefe, who is facing multiple charges including murder and conspiracy to commit murder, was arrested in July at his Johannesburg home.

The arrest was in connection with the 2022 murder of popular musician Oupa John Sefoka, better known as DJ Sumbody. Kunene was at Molefe’s residence at the time of the arrest.

“KENNY KUNENE IS CLEARED”

McKenzie says a probe by law firm Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr (CDH) found no evidence implicating Kunene in any wrongdoing.

“Kenny Kunene is cleared, finish and klaar,” he declared in a Facebook post.

Kunene has insisted from the start that he was at Molefe’s house only to assist a journalist from his online publication, Africa Global News, with an interview. According to the CDH report, his version of events is corroborated by witness interviews and supporting documents.

“The documents and information checked have also corroborated his story,” the report reads.

MOLEFE DENIED BAIL

Following the July incident, Kunene resigned as a councillor and as the City of Johannesburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport. He was also placed on 30 days’ leave from party duties while the investigation unfolded.

Despite the backlash, McKenzie has defended his deputy, saying he is satisfied with Kunene’s innocence, but emphasised that broader investigations into Molefe must continue.

Molefe was denied bail in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court in August and remains in custody as his trial approaches.

DO YOU THINK KENNY KUNENE SHOULD BE REINSTATED AS TRANSPORT MMC?
