KwaZulu-Natal set for severe thunderstorms and coastal winds

KwaZulu-Natal will face a storm-filled start to the week, as forecasters warn of widespread thunderstorms, disruptive rains, and persistent strong winds along the coast.

The province will remain one of the hardest hit by unsettled weather patterns.

“We still have very unsettled weather gripping KwaZulu-Natal, where widespread thunderstorms are going on,” said Joel Guy, a forecaster.

The storm activity will continue through Sunday night and into Monday, with concerns about localised flooding in flood-prone and low-lying areas.

Coastal Winds Pose Dangers for the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal

The South Coast faces particularly dangerous conditions due to fresh to strong coastal winds.

“It’s going to be rather breezy for the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, with persistent strong winds expected,” Guy noted.

Authorities urged residents and holidaymakers to avoid risky sea activities, as rough coastal waters could put lives in danger.

Weather Warnings Issued

KwaZulu-Natal remains under a level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms, which carry a low likelihood of forming but pose major risks if they develop.

“If severe storms do occur, the impact could be significant,” Guy cautioned.

While inland towns like Ladysmith and Newcastle will experience cool daytime highs, Durban is expected to remain cloudy and wet, with a maximum of 19°C.
