An unknown substance has reportedly turned the Limpopo River green, prompting Zimbabwean authorities to launch an investigation.
Alarming reports have emerged of chemical contamination in the water system.
Early findings point to possible cross-border pollution as the source.
Zim Authorities respond to Limpopo River contamination
According to The Herald, the Civil Protection Committee in Beitbridge is currently conducting full-scale investigations at the river.
The Environmental Management Agency (EMA), working with water specialists, has tracked the discoloured water to the Shashe area, where Zimbabwe’s Limpopo River meets the Shashe River bordering Botswana and South Africa.
Sikhangezile Mafu, chairperson of the local civil protection committee and District Development Coordinator, stated that preliminary observations suggest the contamination may originate from South Africa.
She reassured residents that Dam 1, the primary water source for Beitbridge urban, remains unaffected at this time. “The fear is for the public who might use water directly from the Limpopo River and Dam 2,” she explained.
Lab tests are underway, and results are expected soon.
Should South African authorities step in to investigate the contamination?
