New Kaizer Chiefs signing Khanyisa Mayo scored on his debut, but it was not enough to earn Amakhosi their fifth win of the season.
The Glamour Boys were held to a 1-1 draw at home against Marumo Gallants on Wednesday evening. Coming into the match, Chiefs suffered back-to-back defeats and needed a respond to return to winning ways.
Mayo, on his debut, scored the opener for Amakhosi in the 39th minute however his opener was cancelled out late in the second half by Jaisen Clifford. A draw sees Chiefs remain third on the log, and trail Sekhukhune United by six points although they have a game in hand.
Mayo scores on debut for Kaizer Chiefs
After the Marumo Gallants/Chiefs match, former Amakhosi star Junior Khanye praised Mayo’s performance but blamed the coaches for the team’s draw.
“I think this is a game the coach has to take the blame, I’m talking about the assistant and technical team. According to me, they made the wrong substitutions. You can’t take out Mayo and Gaston Sirino; these two players complemented each other,” the ex-winger said on iDiski TV.
“I think the boy (Mayo) is highly motivated to play for Kaizer Chiefs because of his father. You could see that he gave it all and I need Chiefs needed a player like him up front. You need a striker who understands football and the boy is talented.”
Mayo joined Kaizer Chiefs a few weeks ago but only made his debut on Wednesday evening. He is currently on loan from CR Belouizdad.
