MK Party distances itself from Floyd Shivambu’s media briefing

UMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party says it did not approve the highly anticipated media briefing by its former secretary-general Floyd Shivambu.

This is according to a report by Independent Online. On Wednesday, 18 June, Shivambu shared on his social media platforms that he will hold a briefing which will focus on critical matters currently confronting South Africa.

FLOYD SHIVAMBU TO ANNOUNCE HIS RESIGNATION FROM MK PARTY?

In August 2024 Shivambu left the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) he co-founded with Julius Malema in 2013 to join the Jacob Zuma-led party where he served as national organiser and secretary-general within 10 months. He was recently axed as secretary-general and redeployed as an ordinary member of Parliament; however, his name does not appear on the party’s list of MPs.

MK Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela told Independent Online that they have not been made aware of this briefing, which uses MK brand colours, or the announcement by Floyd to hold this briefing.

“It has not been sanctioned by the party and as the official spokesperson I was not made aware of this. We will have to wait and see what the briefing is about before we proceed any further,” he told the publication.

WHY WAS HE AXED AS SECRETARY-GENERAL?

Earlier this month, the party said Floyd Shivambu’s visit to fugitive pastor Shepherd Bushiri in Malawi during Easter was unauthorised and he travelled without informing the party or Zuma.

The party said his actions violated the MK Party’s constitution, citing Section 3(j), which forbids international trips that go against the party’s agenda. Additionally, they said that Shivambu’s trip compromised the party’s values and image.

DUDUZILE-ZUMA SAMBUDLA INSULTS

In February, Zuma’s daughter Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, took to X and insulted Shivambu, calling him useless and the “worst thing that has ever happened to the MK Party”.

In a series of posts, Zuma-Sambudla said Shivambu, who joined the party in August 2024, is a useless newcomer.

In response, Zuma said such actions are unacceptable, divisive, denigrating, and offensive. They undermine the principles of unity, respect, and discipline that are fundamental to its values.

DO YOU THINK FLOYD SHIVAMBU WOULD START HIS POLITICAL PARTY SHOULD HE LEAVE THE MK PARTY?
