MK Party presses Bheki Cele to answer for KZN top cop Mkhwanazi’s claims

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) is demanding that former Police Minister Bheki Cele appear before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee.

The committee, appointed by the National Assembly, has been tasked with investigating explosive allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Mkhwanazi alleged that Senzo Mchunu – who was recently placed on special leave – along with other senior police and political officials, had been colluding with crime syndicates.

MK PARTY CALLS FOR ANSWERS

The MK Party insists that Cele must testify before the committee, arguing that the alleged corruption pre-dates Mchunu’s police leadership. In an interview with Newzroom Afrika, MK Party MP David Skosana described the allegations as “disturbing” and called for accountability.

Skosana said political killings in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng occurred long before Mchunu’s appointment. The MP also said that Cele should answer to the Ad Hoc Committee. He believes that citizens deserve to know the truth about the state of South Africa

“You can’t have the police do as they please, you know, and the politicians as well do as they please. We can’t have that in this country,” added Skosana.

MKHWANAZI TO APPEAR BEFORE AD HOC COMMITTEE

Mkhwanazi will be the first to testify before the committee, following a week of extensive and robust deliberations.

The committee resolved that all witnesses must submit sworn written statements before appearing to answer oral questions. This safeguard is intended to ensure that proceedings are based on verified evidence and matters of fact, while excluding hearsay or unsubstantiated claims. However, the rule will not prevent the committee from pursuing new information if it emerges during testimony.

Meanwhile, the committee’s terms of reference are set to be adopted at its next meeting. It is expected to finalise its work by 31 October.
