Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR) teams responded to an emergency call from three stranded German tourists on Table Mountain late last Friday.
The group, aged 22-24, had started up the India Venster hiking trail at 15:30, intending to hike to the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Upper Cable Station.
However, as darkness fell and cold, misty conditions set in, they decided not to attempt the final scramble onto Fountain Ledge, but rather call the emergency number – (021) 937 0300.
Well prepared
The three visiting hikers were well prepared, carrying extra warm clothing, food, and water – essential supplies that helped them stay safe while waiting for rescuers to arrive.
WSAR teams together with SANParks – Table Mountain National Park Rangers battled poor visibility and strong winds to locate the group and guide them safely down the mountain.
The rescue was successfully concluded at 00:27 on Saturday.
Reminder: Mountains can turn dangerous quickly – always check weather forecasts and plan your hike accordingly. Save the correct emergency contact number – (021) 937 0300.
