‘More than a crown’: Mia le Roux reflects on her Miss SA legacy

Mia le Roux is closing her chapter as Miss South Africa 2024 with gratitude, pride, and a renewed commitment to empowerment.

Reflecting on her journey, the titleholder shared a heartfelt message on Instagram.

MIA LE ROUX’S REIGN AS MISS SOUTH AFRICA

She thanked her supporters for being part of her journey. She called it “an incredible journey fuelled by love, strength, and community spirit”.

The pageant queen was crowned on 10 August 2024. She made history as the first deaf woman to wear the Miss South Africa crown.

She utilised the platform to champion inclusivity through her advocacy initiative, the Mia le Roux Movement, as per her Miss South Africa profile.

THE MIA LE ROUX MOVEMENT

The campaign is deeply personal to her. It focuses on raising awareness about the challenges faced by the deaf community while pushing for equal opportunities for all.

Her organisation’s partnerships with the Dis-Chem Foundation and B4i Academy have already changed lives.

In February 2025, the Gift of Hearing initiative began providing free cochlear implants to individuals with hearing impairments who cannot afford them.

The surgeries, performed pro bono by Operation Healing Hands specialists, have so far restored hearing for several South Africans. This includes three young children this year.

INCLUSION AND ECONOMIC INTELLIGENCE

Beyond hearing restoration, Mia le Roux’s collaboration with the B4i Academy empowered over 160 learners with disabilities across South Africa.

They did this through accredited learnerships in business and technology fields.

“Inclusion is not charity, it is economic intelligence,” she told participants, emphasising the importance of dignity and access for all.

REDIFINING MISS SOUTH AFRICA

Mia le Roux describes handing over her crown not as an end, but as “a transition into a new and beautiful season.”

She hopes to continue building on the movement she started. She hopes to do this by advocating for accessibility, and inspiring others to embrace differences with courage and kindness.

From her compassionate leadership to tangible initiatives impacting communities nationwide, she has redefined what it means to be Miss South Africa.
