Move to Kaizer Chiefs edging closer after Orlando Pirates exit?

Kaizer Chiefs could be set to pounce on a player after his release from arch rivals Orlando Pirates was confirmed.

Pirates announced the release of Thabiso Monyane and Paseka Mako, with Chiefs reportedly eyeing one of them.

Chiefs linked to Monyane transfer

Earlier, it was reported by this publication that Chiefs were offered the services of Monyane as a free agent. These news may have come as a shock for many as firstly, any direct move between the rivals is still rare. In fact, last season the move from Pirates to Amakhosi by Bongani Sam was the first to involve club to club negotiations.

In the case of Monyane, the Chiefs links were surprising because, he has been a one club man since his career started. He came through the Pirates academy before making his senior team debut in 2019 and not looking back since. A couple of seasons ago, he had established himself as a regular at the club. He had also emerged as not only a top prospect for the Sea Robbers, but potentially for Bafana Bafana too. But injuries have since hindered his trajectory and limited his game time.

At the start of the season, Pirates signed Deano van Rooyen, further limiting the game time opportunities for Monyane. In fact, he was linked in a swap deal that would see him move to Stellenbosch FC. In the end he stayed put but hardly made an impact in an injury ravaged season. But Chiefs could be about to come to the rescue and the move could be edging closer now.

Pirates release means move going ahead?

This due to the player being officially released now by Pirates, meaning that there won’t be a last minute renewal. This will open the door further for Chiefs to speak to the player and his representatives and seal a deal early. This will also be an advantage to Amakhosi who have announced their pre-season plans for early July.
