Muizenberg beachfront upgrades: Existing seawall being removed

The City of Cape Town recently announced further updates on the current upgrade project along the Muizenberg beachfront.

According to the City, all is on track to open the eastern parking area on the beach side, in front of the Muizenberg Civic Centre, to the public by 1 August 2025.

Next up for the refurbishment is the removal of the old seawalls along the beach.

The City said that the refurbishment entails major upgrades to public amenities and replacing the aged seawalls.

Before this, work on the coastal revetment, the stormwater pipeline, as well as the layer work at the western parking area, was already being done.

“The project is moving along well, despite the rainy weather. I visited the beachfront a few days ago, and the project team confirmed that all is on track to open the eastern parking area on the beach side, in front of the Muizenberg Civic Centre, to the public by 1 August 2025. I know our surfing community will be very excited to hear this.” the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews, said.

Alderman Andrews added that next up would be the removal of sections of the existing seawall at Surfer’s Corner.

These original sandstone rocks that make up the wall will be stored and later assessed for use in the new design, as they are key to the corner’s heritage.
