MultiChoice has made history by securing a record-breaking five nominations for South Africa at the 2025 International Emmy Awards.
This achievement marks the most nominations ever won by an African country in a single year. These nominations place South Africa third overall, behind only the UK and Brazil.
THE EMMY NOMINATIONS
The nominated titles showcase the diversity and strength of local storytelling. SuperSport’s Rugby World Cup documentary Chasing the Sun 2 earned a Best Sports Documentary nod.
It captured the Springboks’ triumphant 2023 campaign.
Afrikaans crime drama Koek was recognised in the Best Drama Series category, while M-Net’s School Ties landed a nomination for Best Documentary.
SOUTH AFRICAN TALENT AT THE EMMYS
Showmax’s Catch Me a Killer received two honours. This included Best Performance by an Actress for Charlotte Hope’s portrayal of Micki Pistorius, South Africa’s first serial-killer profiler.
In addition, Play Room’s Play Room Live secured a nomination in the Kids: Factual and Entertainment category.
MULTICHOICE AND TELLING AUTHENTIC STORIES
Nomsa Philiso, MultiChoice’s Director of Content, praised the recognition. “We are incredibly proud of our teams and production partners.
These nominations prove that African stories, built with creativity and cultural depth, can sit proudly on the world stage.”
This success continues MultiChoice’s momentum. Over the past eight years, the company has earned 11 iEmmy nominations, according to DSTV.
AFRICAN CONTENT
In 2025 alone, MultiChoice invested more than R8 billion in African content. They funded 5 000 new hours of programming and expanded their library to over 90 000 hours.
That equals more than a decade of continuous viewing. The nominations highlight the global appetite for South African content.
NOMINATED TITLES
Recent international sales include Catch Me a Killer reaching BritBox in North America, BBC First in Europe, and the Alibi Channel in the UK. Locally, audiences can binge all the nominated titles on Showmax.
Winners will be announced in New York City on 24 November 2025. For South Africa, these nominations signal a new era where home-grown stories claim their place at the forefront of global entertainment.
