MANY people are turning to privacy fences as a way to conceal their homes from the prying eyes of nosy neighbours.
However, one person was shocked when they saw the lengths a neighbour had gone to add a barrier by their front door.

This privacy fence was spotted in a home’s front garden – and divided internet users[/caption]
Instead of opting for a bamboo or faux foliage screen, like many people do, they had instead made a DIY one using pool noodles.
The foam noodles appeared to have been taped together using some black duct tape, and then hung suspended from the front porch.
The baffled neighbour uploaded a photo to Reddit showing off the homemade item.
They wrote: “Privacy fence. Saw this in my ex-husband’s townhouse community.
“The way it’s suspended from the gutter got me.”
Many people were shocked at the unusual privacy solution, with many rushing to the comments to share their views.
One said: “Thats like 40 bucks in pool noodles, I feel like there were easier cheaper options.”
Another added: “Curtains would be WAY cheaper. $3-4 each around here.”
And a third commented: “This tells the entire neighbourhood that I REALLY don’t want to talk to the asshole next door.”
Some people also pointed out that they’d only hung the pool noodle privacy on one side of the front garden.
The original poster replied, joking: “Maybe they are saving up for it. Or maybe they only hate the one neighbour.”
FENCE ROW
Neighbours are great when you are all getting along well – but it can be awkward if one side’s property starts to fall into disrepair.
This is what happened to one homeowner, who was left frustrated at his neighbour’s fence between their gardens.
Taking to Reddit, they showed how entire sections of the fence had fallen down, so you could see into each garden.
They wrote: “My neighbour not looking after his fence particularly well.
“So I’ve let my bushes grow to fill the gaps where the fence panels should be.”

In response, they let their plants ‘fill in the gaps’[/caption]
Despite trying to solve the issue, they said the neighbour was not happy at all.
They continued in the post: “He’s complained that I’m ‘neglecting my garden’.
“My house is on the right hand side with the kayak.”
In the gaps of the fence, the person had let their ivy grow in the space, without pruning it down.
How to create privacy in your garden
CREATING privacy in your garden can be achieved in a number of ways depending on your budget, and the size of your space. Here are some effective ways to enhance privacy in your garden:
1. Fencing
- Install a tall, solid wooden or vinyl fence. This is one of the most straightforward ways to gain immediate privacy. Or use lattice panels, trellis, or slatted fencing to add a decorative touch while still offering privacy.
2. Hedges and Plants
- Fast-growing evergreen shrubs or trees like Leylandii, Thuja, or Bamboo along the boundary of your garden can help with privacy. Grow a dense hedge using plants like Boxwood, Privet, or Laurel. It may take time to grow, but it provides a natural and green privacy screen. Use climbers like Ivy, Clematis, or Wisteria on fences or trellises to create a lush, green privacy barrier.
3. Outdoor Curtains
- Hang outdoor curtains around pergolas, gazebos, or patios for an easy-to-adjust privacy solution.
4. Sound Barriers
- A water fountain or small waterfall can help drown out noise, adding to the sense of privacy. Or install fencing designed to reduce noise if privacy from sound is also a concern.
