Movie lovers have a new reason to head to Durban’s Gateway Theatre of Shopping.
Nu Metro has officially opened its flagship cinema complex at the Umhlanga mall, marking a major milestone in the city’s entertainment scene.
The cinema will also offer a brand new experience, and the first-of-its-kind in South Africa.
Nu Metro opens up shop at Gateway
The revamped Nu Metro Gateway now houses nine premium auditoriums, each designed for a top-tier viewing experience.
The standout feature: South Africa’s first-ever ScreenX theatre, an immersive 270-degree panoramic format that extends the movie across three walls, surrounding viewers in the on-screen action.
Other highlights include Xtreme auditoriums equipped with Dolby Atmos 3D sound, 4K ultra-HD laser projection, and 4DX multi-sensory technology – where motion seats and environmental effects bring the film to life.
The opening marks a full-circle moment for the space, previously operated by Ster-Kinekor before its closure. Nu Metro’s arrival signals a fresh chapter for both the mall and the city’s cinema landscape.
“From the sleek new design to the immersive formats, every detail reflects our commitment to delivering unforgettable entertainment,” Beverley Govender, Senior Marketing Manager at Nu Metro, said as per IOL.
Gateway Theatre of Shopping management says the new addition fits perfectly with its focus on offering premium experiences.
“Entertainment has always been an integral part of Gateway’s appeal,” Feysel Potgieter, General Manager of the mall, also said.
“This next-generation cinema complex will further enrich the mix of experiences available to our shoppers, adding significant value to the overall offering.” Potgieter added.
With its futuristic design and cutting-edge technology, the new Nu Metro is expected to become a major drawcard for Durban moviegoers – and a big win for Gateway’s entertainment lineup.
