New government-run e-hailing service on the cards for South Africa

The Gauteng Department of Transport is gearing up to roll out its own e-hailing platform, a move aimed at improving safety and accountability in the ride-hailing industry.

According to Mybroadband, during a media briefing on Monday, 18 August 2025, Gauteng transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela revealed that discussions were already underway to create a provincial e-hailing app that will be developed with input from all stakeholders.

“There are various proposals for a solution on the table. It’s an opportunity for us to come up with a Gauteng e-hailing app, which all of us will be responsible for,” Diale-Tlabela said.

Safer options when e-hailing in South Africa

A key driver behind the initiative is safety. Diale-Tlabela noted that existing ride-hailing apps have been plagued by safety concerns, which have pushed many residents in the province to abandon them.

“We know some apps are notorious for not being safe, and as a result, all of us have moved away from using those apps,” she said.

“At the end of the day, as government, we are held responsible. That’s why you see us saying: let’s work on our own e-hailing app, that you, as society and communities in Gauteng, can hold us responsible.” she added.

She also urged the national Department of Transport to finalise regulations for the industry, stressing that Gauteng is ready to chart its own course in the meantime.

The Gautrain management team has since been tasked with exploring how the idea can be refined and implemented.
