In another innovation to make the City of Cape Town the number one outlet for vehicle licence renewals, the city is proud to launch its first vehicle licensing renewal drive-through facility in Brackenfell.
This pioneering step makes it quicker for motorists to renew their vehicle licence discs – on average within five minutes.
The brand new facility is situated on the corner of Reservoir and Kruispad Roads in Brackenfell.
Motorists can renew their vehicle licence discs without leaving their cars.
Operating hours
The drive-through will operate Mondays to Fridays from 11:30 to 19:30 and on Saturdays from 11:00 to 14:30.
The city, as agents for the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), is working to extend operating hours on weekdays.
Once finalised, the new times will be shared with the public.
Over the months, the city will be exploring other suitable drive-through facilities.

‘At this stage, our new facility will cater exclusively for the renewal of motor vehicle licences. To ensure a more efficient service to our residents, it will be cashless, accepting debit and credit card payments.
‘The City is excited to bring this innovation to Brackenfell. The drive-through aims to make life easier for motorists – now you can simply drive up, pay by card, receive your new disc and be on your way. Our initial tests indicate that a renewal process in the drive-through could take a motorist less than five minutes to renew their disc if all paperwork is correct. Motorists who received a renewal notice via SMS need to simply show the SMS.

‘This new facility is another innovation that we are adding to ensure that the City remains the number one most trusted and convenient motor vehicle licence renewal agent. We encourage motorists to make use of the Brackenfell drive-through and experience the convenience of renewing your disc from the comfort of your vehicle,’ said the Mayoral Committee Member for Finance, Councillor Siseko Mbandezi.
No cash will be kept on the premises.
The opening of the drive-through follows the launch of the city’s Online Booking System, which empowers residents to make bookings for key municipal services, including:
- Motor vehicle licensing and registrations
- Municipal account payments
- General enquiries or making account payment arrangements
The online booking service is currently available at selected branches, with plans to expand further.
Is this something you can see yourself using in future to renew your licence?
