NOOSE tightens as Gupta family properties raided in India

The noose continues to tighten on the Gupta family accused of state capture and corruption in South Africa. According to India Today, fresh raids on Gupta family properties took place in India this week. Plus, recent seizure and auctioning of assets in Johannesburg’s Saxonwold has netted more than R34 million.

As such, at the behest of South African authorities, India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided multiple locations in India this week. Including properties in New Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and the Gupta family ancestral home in Saharanpur.

NOOSE TIGHTENS ON GUPTA FAMILY

Bringing the Gupta family to justice would be a huge and much-needed win for President Cyril Ramaphosa and South Africa. Operations in India were carried out under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), reports IOL.

At the Gupta family ancestral home in Saharanpur, ED officials conducted a five-hour search. They reportedly seized documents and digital records believed to be linked to money laundering, shell entities, and offshore transactions. Likewise, ED investigators targeted Gupta family businesses believed to work through Dubai-based shell companies to launder illicit funds.

ACTIVE PURSUIT

Due to ties with former president Jacob Zuma, the Gupta family was once one of South Africa’s most powerfully corrupt families in the 2000s. However, they now face mounting international pressure for alleged state capture and corruption. India is now actively pursuing the Gupta family, while South Africa continues to liquidate their assets, adding more financial pressure to the accused.

Back in 2022, Atul and Rajesh Gupta were arrested in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) under an Interpol red notice. However, an extradition request to face charges in South Africa was inexplicably rejected on technical grounds by the UAE.
