A new face will own the Orlando Pirates captain’s armband next season. Innocent Maela said goodbye to the club after wearing the skipper’s band for three seasons.
The club’s longest-serving former captain, Lucky Lekgwathi, has offered three candidates for consideration before next season.
The names are the central defensive duo of Tapelo Xoki, Nkosinathi Sibisi and Makhehleni Makhaula in Orlando Pirates’ central midfield.
The sensational teenager, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, earned a special mention.

“I think Tapelo has done well in the team, and he led the team well whenever he wore the armband. I think he can take the role,” the Orlando Pirates legend told Soccer Laduma. “Another one is Sibisi, who also did a great job whenever he was captain. I think there is room for improvement for both Xoki and Sibisi,” Lekgwathi added.
“The third option for me, with his experience, is Makhaula. He was once the captain of AmaZulu, and I think he can do the job. I believe he can lead the team.
“But watch the space. In future, Mbokazi is my future. One day is one day,” Lekgwathi concluded.
