Orlando Pirates legend questions the boss

Orlando Pirates supporters’ big question has finally been answered. Abdeslam Ouaddou has replaced Jose Riviero as the head coach.

The 46-year-old Moroccan caught the eye while coaching Marumo Gallants late last season. He saved the club’s top-flight status in 12 games.

Following his shock appointment to coach Orlando Pirates, the club’s former midfielder, Benedict Vilakazi, does not agree with the call.

“To be honest, I’m not entirely convinced that he’s the coach who can elevate Pirates to the next level,” said Vilakazi, speaking exclusively to the Siya crew.

“I’m not questioning his credentials or ability, he’s clearly shown promise, and we’ve seen some of his work during his time at Marumo Gallants. But this is Orlando Pirates, and the pressure here is completely different. This is a club with massive expectations, where every decision is scrutinised, and the demand for results is constant,” he said.

DUTY TO SUPPORT ALL ORLANDO PIRATES COACHES

The Soweto-born legend concluded that he will support Ouaddou and hope for the best.

That said, we have to give him a fair chance, just like other coaches who came before him. We can only judge his impact over time. For now, all we can do is support him.

“Coaching a club of Orlando Pirates’ stature is no child’s play – it takes more than just tactics. It requires full support from management, the players, and especially the supporters. I truly wish him all the best because he will need all the backing he can get,” Vilakazi concluded.
