Orlando Pirates left South Africa on Monday to kick off their pre-season training in Spain, but sharp-eyed paparazzi at OR Tambo International Airport noticed something odd. Monnapule Saleng, one of the team’s brightest stars, was nowhere to be seen.
With the new Betway Premiership campaign kicking off on 1 August, the Soweto giants wasted no time ramping up preparations. They’ve lined up an intensive schedule in Marbella, featuring friendly clashes with English side Bolton Wanderers and La Liga outfit Granada.
Where is Monnapule Saleng?
Supporters expected to see Saleng board the flight with his teammates, but he was a notable absentee. According to a well-placed source close to the club, the winger will fly out later this week.
“Saleng is very much part of the plans for Pirates next session. He is sorting out a few things and will leave the country on Thursday to rejoin Pirates for their pre-season training in Spain,” confirmed the source.
Saleng’s delayed departure has sparked speculation, but a source insists his commitment to the club remains solid.
New faces eager to impress in Spain
All eyes will be on new signings Sihle Nduli, Oswin Appollis, and Yonela Mbuthuma as they look to make their mark in the famous black and white. The trip offers these young talents a golden opportunity to integrate with the squad and impress coach Jose Riveiro ahead of a demanding season.
The Bucs will face Polokwane City in the MTN8 quarter-finals shortly after their return. A week later, they’ll launch their league campaign, aiming to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for domestic dominance.

Meanwhile, Pirates are finalising loan deals for midfielders Goodman Mosele and Azola Tshobeni, both of whom are expected to join Chippa United for the 2025/2026 season. The move is seen as part of the club’s strategy to ensure regular game time for emerging talents.
