HERE’S HOW TO USE YOUR ELECTRICITY DEVICES SAFELY THIS WINTER

As the cold season is approaching in South Africa, many people rely on heating devices to keep warm.

Sometimes, using these devices unsafely may result in house fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Here’s how to safely use your devices to keep warm this winter:

  • Keep your windows open- According to Eskom, when using your devices, make sure that you keep at least one window open to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, as it might result in death.
  • Read the instructions on your device- check that your device has the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) approval to ensure that it is safe for use. Make sure that you read the instructions carefully. Additionally, avoid leaving your devices unattended to especially while sleeping. If you feel that you are feeling sleepy, it’s best to switch off your device before going to bed.
  • Avoid multi-plugging- Plug your device directly into the plug socket instead of plugging it into multi-plugs or extension cords, as it may cause overheating. Inspect that your cords do not have damage and when in use, keep them at least 1m away from fabric and flammable items.
