KwaZulu-Natal police officers have come under fire after using state resources to escort a high school student to their Matric Dance.
The event took place over the weekend.
MATRIC DANCE GOERS GET BLUE LIGHTS TREATMENT
In a video posted on TikTok, local SAPS were seen escorting several Estcourt Secondary School learners to their Matric Dance. Private vehicles with blue lights and blaring sirens were also part of the VIP entourage’s entrance.
The officers displayed their rifles as they accompanied a Grade 12 student across a nearby red carpet.
In the comments section, many social media users were furious at what they had watched.
“They must be held accountable; this is unacceptable!” commented one. Another added: “State vehicles, which taxpayers pay for, should not be used for any non-SAPS related events”.
A third added: “This is why vans are always unavailable. They’re attending Matric Dances!”.

CAN YOU REQUEST A POLICE ESCORT?
Unbeknownst to many critics, the public may request police escorts to private events, including a Matric Dance.
Individuals can also hire the services of private security companies that provide blue lights and sirens.
