Pride of 10 lions outside Kruger National Park fence a ‘hoax’?

A pride of 10 lions were reportedly spotted outside the fence of the Kruger National Park, moving in the direction of Lulekani, prompting urgent warnings from local authorities.

Lulekani is a township 13km outside Phalaborwa in the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality in the Limpopo province.

Not aware

However, South African National Parks (SANParks) has confirmed that they are not aware of any lions on the loose nor any sightings of the pride.

Initial reports suggested the lions were moving in a coordinated group – possibly in search of food or water.

Regardless, authorities urged residents of Lulekani and surrounding communities to exercise extreme caution and avoid all unnecessary movement outdoors, especially after dark.

Safety Guidelines for Residents:

  • Avoid walking alone or letting children play outside
  • Keep pets and livestock securely enclosed
  • Remain indoors after sunset when possible
  • Report any lion sightings immediately

Emergency Contact Numbers:

  • SANParks Raptor Station (Phalaborwa): 011 738 2957
  • Local SANParks (Lulekani Office): 015 483 0364
  • Manipulate Wildlife Response Team: 015 437 5384

“Community cooperation is vital,” said a SANParks spokesperson.

“We are working around the clock to ensure the safety of both people and animals.”

Residents are encouraged to stay updated through local radio stations and community alert systems as the situation is clarified.
