However, the Sky Sports fan favourite has now revealed he is getting back behind the wheel later this month.
He will race alongside his son, Alex, and historic racing specialist Gary Pearson at the iconic Spa Francorchamps in Belgium this weekend.
The trio will drive a Ford GT40 during the Spa Six Hours classic.
Brundle’s son first broke the news on social media, revealing: “About time really…!
“Martin Brundle will share the wheel of our GT40 with me and Gary Pearson at the Spa Six Hours classic endurance race this weekend.”
And the nine-time F1 podium sitter confirmed the news by re-sharing the post, adding: “I just fancied driving Alex’s GT40 with him.
“Even on GP weekends, we don’t see much of each other, so it’s a rare opportunity for a father and son weekend.
“Me and Al did Le Mans together in 2012 and we’ve raced together in Jaguar E-types, so it’ll be fun.

“I haven’t raced for three years, since the Goodwood Revival, but enjoy working with Gary.
“I’d not driven the GT40 until a test session at Silverstone just before the Festival.
“I wanted to see whether I liked it, and did, so we decided to do Spa.”
However, Brundle has played down talk of a finish high up the grid.
He added: “I have no aspirations [of a result].
“I love Spa and love the car, but have yet to experience it on full tanks.
“That will be interesting.”
Brundle enjoyed a distinguished motorsport career even outside of F1.
In 1990 he won the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans, while he also won the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1988.
