The Sunshine Tour has mourned the loss of one of golf’s most beloved figures, Basil van Rooyen, a caddy whose presence on the fairways spanned decades and whose impact was felt across the global golfing community.
Van Rooyen, known for his vibrant personality, deep knowledge of the game, and unwavering dedication, passed away this week.
The news has sent waves of sadness throughout the sport, with players, colleagues, and fans paying tribute to a man whose contribution extended far carrying a bag.
‘Reputation for professionalism’
Throughout his career, Van Rooyen caddied for some of the most respected players on the Sunshine Tour and internationally, including among others John Daly and David Frost.

He earned a reputation for professionalism, loyalty, and an unmistakable flair that made him a standout figure wherever the game took him.
“Basil van Rooyen was more than a caddy – he was a friend, a mentor, and a legend of the tour,” the Sunshine Tour said in a statement.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
