RIP: Tributes pour in after death of former Springbok

According to multiple reports, former Springbok and Northam Rhinos head coach Bevin Fortuin suffered a suspected heart attack before a Rhinos rugby practice.

Fortuin, who played twice for the Springboks (against Ireland in 2006 and Australia in the 2007 Tri-Nations), remained a well-known figure in South African rugby circles even after hanging up his boots.

The former SWD Eagles and Free State Cheetahs player quickly became a popular coach once he stepped away from the game as a player, and most recently was at the helm of the Northam Rhinos.

“Along with our president Mr. Gonsalves, CEO Mr. Dunne, the executive team, and the entire Zondereinde community, extend our deepest condolences to his wife, young son, and family,” the club said in a statement.

“Bevin’s immense contributions, both on and off the field, leave an immeasurable legacy. Our community feels his loss deeply, but heaven is richer for his presence. We salute you, Bevin Fortuin, Springbok no. 780, for the profound impact you made on the Northam Rhinos and the Setaria and Zondereinde communities. Rest easy, champ!”
