‘Riveiro should have stayed with Pirates’ – Chiefs legend

Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo feels Jose Riveiro should have stayed with Orlando Pirates.

The 49-year-old was sacked by Al Ahly on Sunday over poor results. The Spaniard left the Buccaneers last season after three successful years to join the Red Devils. His tenure lasted little over three months before he was given the boot following a poor start to the season.

Khumalo said Riveiro had a future at Pirates and should have extended his stay beyond 2025.

“He should have [signed Pirates extension] because he was given what, five years? And remember, when he was at Pirates, he enjoyed a successful tenure with Orlando Pirates winning five trophies,” Khumalo said on SABC.

“So, the future was bright there. But one thing I can tell you for sure is that Al Ahly drink successful coaches’ blood,” he said.

“When you start to be successful in Africa, they grab you and then after that, two, three weeks you are out. Clearly, it is a lesson to other coaches that you need to be aware about that,” Khumalo added.

Riveiro was replaced with Abdeslam Ouaddou at Pirates this season and the Moroccan coach has already reached one cup final with the Buccaneers.
