Rulani Mokwena gets closer to comeback amid Orlando Pirates link

Rulani Mokwena, one of Africa’s most highly-rated young coaches, continues to dominate headlines following his departure from Wydad Athletic Club. As speculation surrounding his next move intensifies, Orlando Pirates have reportedly reignited their pursuit of their former tactician.

The Houghton-based side, who are currently without a head coach, have placed Mokwena at the top of their wishlist, despite fierce competition from CAF Champions League winners Pyramids FC.

Private Pirates talks already underway

A source revealed that Pirates have not abandoned their push to secure Mokwena’s return. According to the source, one high-ranking official has been directly engaging with the coach in a low-profile approach.

“The interest is definitely there but no one, not even his agent is talking about this move. Apparently only one person at Pirates is the one who is talking to the coach. If the deal happens it will be between that person and the coach. At the moment it’s believed that it’s a sensitive issue that no one else at the club will know the result of,” the source said, according to Soccer Laduma.

This communication hints at the high stakes involved and the potential game-changing nature of Mokwena’s return to Soweto.

The Bucs face race against time  

With Pirates set to regroup for pre-season training in the first week of July, time is running out to make a formal coaching appointment. The club is expected to unveil their new head coach before the squad reports back to camp.

Mokwena recently hinted at a sense of urgency, telling the media that he ideally needs to finalise his next role within days to ensure proper planning for the upcoming season.
