More than a week into spring may see many South Africans spring cleaning, and sprucing up their homes. Have you ever thought that your car tyres may need a spring clean?
Tyre experts have advised that slippery roads caused by spring showers may pose a danger to motorists if their tyres are not in good condition.
A quick “spring clean” of your tyre could avoid an accident in the event where you need to break suddenly.
The importance of giving your tyres a spring clean
Keith Phelps, a technical tyre expert at a leading tyre manufacturer in South Africa said: “Most of us don’t think about our tyres until something goes wrong. But with wet roads ahead, it’s worth taking a few minutes now to check that your tyres are clean, safe and ready for the season.”
Why the need for a seasonal tyre check?
- In wet conditions your tyre’s grip ability matters most. Worn threads reduces the tyre’s capacity to channel water away from the underside of the tyre.
- Tyre pressure keeps motorists safe. The incorrect tyre inflation makes it difficult for the vehicle to be in contact with the road surface. It may result in a motorist losing control of his/her vehicle. This may also impede your vehicle’s braking ability.
- Slippery conditions exacerbates existing bulges and cracks on tyres.
A tyre spring cleans entails:
- A wash and wipe down is needed. This makes hidden cuts and cracks more visible.
- Check your tyre thread. A safe measure is 3mm to handle wet road conditions.
- Tyre pressure checks must be a weekly happening, when tyres are cold. Adhere to the vehicle manufacturer’s requirements for tyre pressure.
- If possible, go to a tyre fitment centre for a professional tyre pressure check.
- Always ensure that your spare tyre is in a roadworthy condition.
- Certain tyre brands may offer value benefits such as tyre insurance against irreplaceable damage. Invest in such tyres.
“Spring is a season of renewal, but it also brings the challenge of sudden rains and slippery roads. A quick tyre check can make the difference between a safe journey and a roadside emergency,” added Phelps.
