SAFTU’s Zwelinzima Vavi slams 3.8% salary increase for politicians

The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) has sharply criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to approve a 3.8% salary increase for top political office-bearers, describing the move as insensitive and out of touch with the realities faced by ordinary South Africans.

The approved increases apply to remuneration packages for the President, Deputy President, Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Premiers, Members of Executive Councils (MECs) and Members of Parliament.

‘Scandalous’

SAFTU Secretary General Zwelinzima Vavi said the decision was “scandalous”, particularly at a time when millions of South Africans are struggling to survive amid rising living costs, high unemployment and persistent poverty.

“It’s an insult to workers,” Vavi said.

“Between three and seven million workers are earning below even the national minimum wage of R5 500. This is happening when the food basket in South Africa costs between R5 500 and R6 000.”

He added that many working families are unable to meet their basic needs, despite being employed.

“That means even working people are part of the nearly 20 million South Africans who go without at least one meal every day,” Vavi said.

Prioritise job creation

SAFTU argues that approving salary increases for political leaders under these conditions undermines government commitments to reduce inequality and address the cost-of-living crisis.

The federation has called on the government to prioritise workers’ wages, job creation and social support instead of increasing pay for political office-bearers.

The presidency has not yet responded to SAFTU’s criticism.
