President Cyril Ramaphosa has weighed in on the allegations levelled against Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu, and Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, Shadrack Sibiya.
Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in KwaZulu-Natal (SAPS KZN), alleged that the pair are running high-profile crime syndicates in collaboration with government officials.
Commenting on the allegations, Ramaphosa said it’s a matter of grave national security that must receive priority attention. He emphasised the importance of safeguarding the country’s security services and upholding the rule of law.
RAMAPHOSA CALLS FOR RESTRAINT
The president also urged discipline and restraint in handling the matter, warning that public accusations and commentary could erode trust in the police. He said such actions threaten the unity and focus of the SAPS.
Ramaphosa is set to announce further steps when he returns from the BRICS Leaders’ Summit currently underway in Brazil.
MCHUNU SAYS CLAIMS ARE BASELESS
The police minister dismissed the claims as “wild allegations”, saying he will not allow his integrity or the SAPS to be undermined without evidence. He confirmed that the police would review Mkhwanazi’s statements and consider appropriate action.
Mchunu reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the rule of law and reducing crime, particularly in provinces with high crime rates.
