SARS issues warning: ‘Pay your tax debt – or else!’

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has called on taxpayers to make their tax payments as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary delays, penalties, and interest for late payment.

With September marking the halfway point of the financial year, SARS emphasised the importance of timely compliance and thanked those who have already contributed to the country’s revenue.

‘Robust, secure and safe’

“All taxpayers, who will be making payments to SARS through various platforms such as eFiling, EFT and payments at banks, can be confident that these payment platforms are robust, secure and safe,” SARS said in a statement.

The tax authority assured the public that these platforms adhere to internationally recognised standards and are designed to be user-friendly, allowing taxpayers to fulfil their legal obligations efficiently.

In addition to the payment reminder, SARS also issued a warning about rising online scams targeting taxpayers.

“Your credentials on all financial platforms are continuously at risk,” the statement read.

‘Phishing’

SARS reminded users that it will never request them to click on any links to engage with the service.

All eFiling users are urged to protect their login information and use only verified tax practitioners.

There have been multiple reports of phishing attempts and fraudulent schemes aimed at stealing personal information.

As a result, SARS has encouraged the public to remain vigilant when using online services, especially as the deadline for various tax obligations approaches.

“The month of September represents the halfway mark to the financial year, and SARS wishes to thank all taxpayers who diligently contribute to the fiscus through their tax payments,” the statement concluded.

Taxpayers seeking more information or wishing to make payments can do so by visiting the official SARS website at www.sars.gov.za.
