Scandal! comes to an end after 20 years on screen

After 20 years on South African screens, one of e.tv’s most-watched Soap operas, Scandal! is coming to an end.

The independent television station announced on its Facebook page on Friday, 26 September 2025, that the soap opera would air its last episode in June 2026.

They also mentioned that due to its constant review of programmes and scheduling, they believe that the popular drama series has reached its end cycle.

SCANDAL! COMES TO AN END

The SAFTA-award winning drama series made its debut on screen in January 2005.

Since then, it has become a household name in South Africa, attracting millions of viewers and setting a benchmark in local television.

With its powerful storylines and unforgettable characters, the show sparked conversations and reflected the complexities of everyday life.

e.tv extended its gratitude to Ochre Moving Pictures, the production company behind Scandal!, for their unwavering creativity throughout the years and also appreciated its cast.

“The channel also pays tribute to the talented cast and dedicated crew, writers, directors, producers, technicians and all those behind the scenes whose artistry, commitment and passion have been central to the show’s remarkable success and longevity,” the e.tv statement read.

Executive Producer at Ochre Moving Pictures, Stan Joseph, also paid his tribute to the show, citing an incredible journey and labour of love.

Joseph said, “Over twenty years, our writers, directors, actors and crew have poured their hearts into bringing authentic South African stories to life. We are deeply grateful to e.tv for their trust and to our audiences for their unwavering support. While it is bittersweet to say goodbye, we are proud of the legacy of Scandal! leaves behind.”

AN ERA OF LONG-RUNNING SOAPIES COMING TO AN END?

Earlier this year, it was announced that the long-running drama series Muvhango would come to an end.

The Tshivenda soapie wrapped up its remarkable 28-year journey on television and aired its last episode on 8 August 2025.

Notable long-standing shows that have also been canned include 7de Laan, which was cancelled in 2023 after being on screen for 23 years.

In 2021, Rhythm City, also e.tv’s one of popular soapies, was also canned after running for 14 years.

In the same year, Isibaya was also cancelled after being on screen for eight years.
