School calendar: When does term four start?

After this brief spring break, learners and teachers across South Africa will gear up for the final stretch of the school year. Term 4 officially begins on Monday, 13 October, marking the start of a busy final term before the long-awaited summer holidays.

The school year will officially wrap up on Friday, 12 December, allowing families ample time to rest, travel, and celebrate the festive season. With exams concluding in late November, December will see many learners transitioning from the academic pressure of the fall to the relaxation of summer.

Durban beach updates

As families plan seaside getaways, the eThekwini Municipality has released updates on beach and pool safety in Durban. As of 30 September, three more beaches have been closed due to poor water quality. These are Mdloti Main, Umhlanga Main, and Bronze Beach, in addition to the previously closed Winkelspruit and Reunion beaches.

“This status of beaches and pools will be updated as and when their status changes. You can still enjoy other recreational activities at closed beaches, but you can’t swim,” the municipality said in a statement.

Despite the closures, 18 Durban beaches remain open for swimming between 6:00 and 18:30, including popular spots like North Beach, Bay of Plenty, South Beach, and Ushaka. The municipality continues to monitor water quality to ensure safety for residents and tourists.

Looking ahead to summer

As Term 4 begins next week, both learners and parents are balancing school commitments with holiday plans. With beach updates and academic deadlines approaching, preparation is key to ending the year smoothly.
