SEE: Cape Town’s Festive Lights Switch-On draws HUGE crowd

Cape Town’s festive season officially came alive on Sunday, 30 November, as thousands gathered on the Grand Parade and along Adderley Street for the 56th annual Festive Lights Switch-On.

The beloved free event, one of the city’s biggest year-end celebrations, lit up the summer skies under this year’s theme, “United in Hope.”

Although the show only kicked off at 16:00, eager families arrived as early as sunrise to secure front-row spots near the main stage.

By mid-afternoon, the Grand Parade was packed with Capetonians and visitors ready to enjoy live music, comedy and the long-awaited moment when the city’s festive lights illuminated Adderley Street.

This year’s entertainment lineup drew huge excitement. DJ Zinhle headlined the event, joined by a vibrant mix of artists including Kurt Darren, DJ Masoodah, Goodluck, Early B, Justin Vega, and the D6 Hanover Minstrels, who brought traditional Cape flair to the celebration.

Adding to the festive spirit, iconic Joe Barber characters Boeta Gamat and Boeta Joe, as well as Carl Wastie, kept the crowd laughing as the official MCs, blending comedy with community-centred humour that has long made the event feel uniquely Capetonian.

The Festive Lights Switch-On, now in its 56th year, has long been a highlight on the city’s holiday calendar, marking the start of the festive season with entertainment and a spectacular light display shared by thousands.
