Shivambu meets King Misuzulu – Is a new political force rising?

Founder of the Afrika Mayibuye Movement, Floyd Shivambu, says he had a productive meeting with the Zulu Monarch, King Misuzulu kaZwelithini.

The pair met to discuss the movement’s future and other matters following Shivambu’s visit to KwaZulu-Natal.

The recently axed member of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party visited the province over the weekend as part of the Mayibuye consultation process.

SHIVAMBU GATHERS SUPPORT IN KZN

Shivambu’s meeting with King Misuzulu centred on the movement’s findings and whether he should formally establish a political organisation. Taking to social media, Shivambu said:

“We had a very productive and instructive meeting with Indlulamithi, Isilo Misuzulu kaZwelithini. Afrika Mayibuye Movement is taking a correct shape and direction! We are blessed!”

Meanwhile, the movement concluded its engagements with the people of KZN on a positive note. During his briefing in Durban, Shivambu stated that the majority of people have called for an alternative political formation. He said communities want a movement that brings together unions, organisations, and a political party to contest the 2026 elections.

Shivambu added that the Mayibuye Movement will recognise the role of traditional and royal leaders across South Africa.

MAYIBUYE IS NOT A BREAKAWAY MOVEMENT

Shivambu insisted that the Afrika Mayibuye Movement is not a splinter group of the MK Party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), or the African National Congress (ANC). He claimed the new movement will surpass some of the country’s largest political parties.

“We are not a breakaway of any of those small organisations. We are an organisation by ourselves, and come elections, we are going to demonstrate that we are above both quantitatively and qualitatively,” said Shivambu.

Shivambu has had a rocky political journey. He began his career within the ANC, later becoming a founding member and deputy president of the EFF. In 2024, he joined the MK Party as secretary-general, a position he held for nearly six months before being removed.
