October is about to become “Ogre-tober” once Shrek Rave arrives in South Africa.
Inspired by the popular Shrek film series, Shrek Rave is where the DJs take the soundtracks of the original four flicks (soon to be five) and give them an electronic dance music makeover. Combined with campy cosplays and crowd sing-alongs, it’s a Shrek fan-cum-raver’s dream come true.
These raves first took off in the United States and the United Kingdom in the early 2020s. Now, this EDM-fuelled nostalgia party is officially on its way to the not-so-swampy shores of Mzansi.
SHREK RAVE TO PAINT JOBURG, CAPE TOWN GREEN
Shrek Rave will take the stage at Sognage in Strydom Park, Johannesburg, on Friday, 10 October.
It will then take over the District nightclub in Cape Town’s District Six a week later on Friday, 17 October.
Attendees – who must be aged 18 or over – are encouraged to dress up in green or as their favourite Shrek characters. Think Donkey, Princess Fiona, the Fairy Godmother or the main man… er, ogre himself, Shrek.
‘NO-BRAINER’ TO BRING SHREK RAVE TO SA
Speaking to Time Out, event co-ordinator Louis Williamson explained why South Africa is the perfect spot to host Shrek Rave.
“We’ve heard about the thriving rave culture and energy in South Africa, so it was a no-brainer to bring it here,” said Williamson.
“The first Shrek Rave we did in London took off instantly and became a worldwide phenomenon. It’s a fantastic movie with a fantastic soundtrack, and when we paired it with rave culture, it just worked.”
THERE ARE LAYERS TO THIS RAVE
In addition to the music sets and sing-alongs à la All Star, there will be live performances, prize giveaways and themed games, visuals and decor as befitting the beloved movies.
“The production value we bring is top-tier – this will be nothing like South African attendees have seen before,” Williamson declared.
Tickets are available now via www.quicket.co.za, and they’re selling out fast. Perhaps it’s a sign that Shrek Rave ought to make more stops in South Africa?
That would be “Shrek”-tacular, alright!
