Shutting down pro-Gaza protests is a welcome step to protect Britain’s Jews – but this can only be the start

THE Home Secretary’s pledge to protect the Jewish community from the protests which have blighted Britain since 2023 is a welcome step.

But this can be only the start.

Tragically, it took a terrorist attack on a synagogue in Manchester which claimed two lives to see changes.

Britain’s Jews have been warning of the threat on our streets for the past two years.

They knew exactly what demonstrators shouting “globalise the intifada” meant – nothing less than a cry for antisemitic violence.

The shake-up announced by Shabana Mahmood will allow the authorities to shut down protests which threaten sections of the community.

What’s clear is that new and more extensive legislation will be needed.

Jewish organisations such as the Community Security Trust must be consulted on what’s needed.

The Government must enforce a wide-ranging crackdown: No platform in mosques or online for hate preachers.

Charities which give a platform to anti-Jewish race hate must be stripped of charitable status.

Antisemites kicked out of the NHS, universities and other public services.

Parliament and the BBC must curb anti-Israel obsessions that fuel antisemitism.

The police must be given full backing to enforce the law — and they must prosecute these extremists with the same speed used against those responsible for racist and violent incitement after the Southport murders.

On Saturday, a mob supporting Palestine Action — a proscribed terrorist organisation — ran amok in London.

Nearly 500 had to be arrested.

Hate speech which fuels violence against Jews must be rooted out.
