Siya Kolisi injury: Big decision had to be made!

Siya Kolisi has missed the first three matches of the Springboks’ 2025 season, having battled with a stiff neck and then an Achilles injury.

Although it was hoped that the Springbok captain would be fit for his ‘home Test’ in Gqeberha this weekend, he has remained unavailable for selection and increasingly fans will be wondering when the loose forward could be back.

After this Saturday’s second Test against Italy, South Africa’s next outing is against Georgia in Bloemfontein on 19 July before the Rugby Championship starts.

Update on Siya Kolisi

At Tuesday’s team announcement press conference, Rassie Erasmus admitted a big decision had to be made on Kolisi.

“He’s from Port Elizabeth, we would have loved to play him here, but you weigh up the positives and negatives of playing him a week early,” Erasmus explained. “We’ve got 14 games this year; if he can play 10, that would be awesome, but we’re not expecting anyone to play all of them.

“He wants to be involved in this game, and so do Mapimps [winger Makazole Mapimpi] and I, because we’re also from here. But the wise decision is to give him another week. It can only be better for him.”

Saturday’s Test against Italy kicks off at 17:10 and will be broadcast live on SuperSport and SABC.
