Snow falls over parts of the country as a cold front moves in

Parts of the Eastern Cape will experience light snow on Wednesday, 6 August, as a cold front pushes across the interior of South Africa. Snowfall is expected in the province’s northwestern and mountainous regions.

Forecaster Odirile Modipa confirmed the snowfall, saying, “Light snow has been observed over the northern parts of the Eastern Cape and is expected to continue into tomorrow.”

Weather: Thunderstorms Across Multiple Provinces

The cold front also triggered scattered showers and thunderstorms across the Free State, Northern Cape, and Western Cape. Severe weather alerts have been issued, including a yellow level 1 warning for damaging waves along the southern coastline.

“Severe thunderstorms are likely in the central interior, including parts of the Northern Cape and Free State,” said Modipa.

She added that these could bring strong winds and hail.

Subzero Nights in Sutherland

Sutherland, known for its cold weather, recorded an overnight minimum of -2°C. Maximum temperatures in the region remain below 10°C, with Cape Town reaching only 15°C and East London at 16°C.
